Extraction is not drying, and the difference costs money
These get used interchangeably and they are two different jobs with two different tools. Confusing them is the single most common reason a water job goes wrong.
Extraction removes liquid water

That last line is the whole argument for extracting properly. A crew that under-extracts and puts fans down is charging you drying-day prices to remove water a machine could have taken out in an hour. Structural drying is the next stage, not a substitute for this one.
What you can see is the smaller half
The puddle is the part that announces itself. It is usually not where most of the water is.
Water goes down and sideways at the same time. By the time you are standing in it, it has already found the gap at the edge of the carpet, run along the tack strip, soaked into the pad underneath, wicked up the bottom few inches of drywall, and gone under the baseboard. Carpet pad in particular is designed to be absorbent — it holds many times its own weight and gives it up slowly.
Water is also heavier than people expect: a single gallon weighs a little over eight pounds. A room’s worth of saturated pad and subfloor is a serious load sitting on a structure that was not designed to carry it, which is why a ceiling holding water is treated as a structural problem before it is treated as a water problem.
This is why we map before we pump. Moisture readings tell us where the water actually travelled, so extraction is aimed at the wet area rather than the visible one. Pumping only what you can see leaves the majority of it in the building.
Why the first hour is different from the fifth
While it is still on the surface
Water sitting on top of hard flooring or in the top of a carpet is the easiest it will ever be to remove. Almost nothing is committed yet, and almost everything is salvageable.
Once it is in the pad and the bottom plate
Extraction still works but takes longer and more passes, and drying is now part of the job rather than a formality. Baseboards start coming off.
Once it is inside the wall cavity
No extractor reaches it. Insulation is holding water against the back of the drywall, and the job changes from removal to controlled opening-up and drying.
Once it has been warm and wet for a day or more
Clean water is no longer clean, and organic material has had the conditions it needs. That threshold is covered on the water damage restoration page — it is the point where cost stops being linear.
How we actually get it out
Different situations need different tools. What comes off the truck is decided on the phone, from what you describe.
Truck-mounted extraction
The most powerful option, with the vacuum and the waste tank on the vehicle. Best for volume on a ground floor within hose reach of the driveway.
Portable extractors
Carried to where the truck cannot reach — upper floors, back rooms, apartments, crawlspaces. Less powerful, but they get to the water.
Submersible pumps
For genuine standing water measured in inches rather than a wet floor. Pumps move volume; vacuum extraction takes over once the level drops too low for them.
Weighted carpet extraction
A weighted head pressed over the carpet forces water up out of the pad beneath it. This is what makes drying carpet in place possible instead of tearing it out.
Wands and detail tools
Edges, stair treads, closets, under toe-kicks. The slow, methodical part — and the part most often skipped.
Cavity and crawlspace extraction
Getting water out from under a floor or inside a structure through access points, rather than opening the whole room up.
When extraction has to wait a few minutes
Speed is the point of this service, but there are four situations where going straight in makes things worse.

Live electricity in the water
Circuits to the affected area go off first. If the panel itself is in the wet zone, that is a utility or electrician call, not a decision to make in the moment.

A ceiling holding water
A bulging ceiling is a load waiting to fall. It gets relieved deliberately, from the side, into a container — not walked underneath.

The source still running
Extracting while water is still arriving is emptying a bath with the tap on. The supply gets shut off first, even if that means the whole house.

Unknown contamination
If nobody can say whether the sewer backed up, it is treated as if it did until we know — different protective equipment, different disposal, different plan.
“Can I just use a shop vac?”
An honest answer, because it is the most-asked question and the answer is not always no.
Sometimes, yes. A small clean-water spill on tile or sealed concrete, caught within minutes, on a wet/dry vacuum rated for water — that is a genuine DIY job. Get it up, get air moving, and check it the next day.
Usually, no, and not because the machine is too weak. A shop vac lifts water off a surface; it has no meaningful ability to pull water back out of a carpet pad or a subfloor. You end up with a floor that looks dry, a pad underneath that is still saturated, and no reading to tell you the difference. That is the exact scenario that turns into a mould call five or six weeks later.
The dividing line is absorption, not volume. If the water only ever touched hard, non-porous surfaces, a shop vac and a fan may genuinely finish the job. The moment carpet, pad, drywall, insulation or timber is involved, the water is inside something and needs equipment that can pull it back out.
What happens the minute extraction finishes
Extraction is stage one. Leaving it there is how a job that was nearly finished becomes an expensive one.

Readings, immediately
Moisture readings taken as soon as the standing water is gone. They set the baseline everything afterwards is measured against.

Questions about water extraction
Do you need to move the furniture out?
Not usually all of it. Pieces sitting in the wet area get blocked up on foam or moved to a dry room so we can extract underneath and so the legs stop staining the carpet. Heavy items on a saturated floor are left alone until the floor can take the load.
Will you have to pull up my carpet?
Often not. Weighted extraction pushes water up out of the pad through the carpet, and if we reach it early enough both can be saved. When the pad has to go, the carpet is usually lifted at one edge, the pad replaced, and the carpet re-laid rather than thrown out.
Can you extract water from a crawlspace?
Yes, with portable equipment and pumps taken in through the access. It matters here more than most places — a wet crawlspace under a Gwinnett ranch home will keep the floor above it damp for weeks and is a common reason a job that looked finished is not.
How much water can you actually remove?
Practically all of the liquid water. What extraction cannot do is remove moisture that has already been absorbed into building materials — that is what the drying stage is for, and why the two always run together.
Where does the water go?
Into the truck’s waste tank or to an approved discharge point. Clean water and contaminated water are handled and disposed of differently, which is one more reason we establish what the water is before starting.
Do I need extraction if the water has already drained away?
Possibly not for the liquid, but almost certainly for what it left behind. Water that drained away on its own has still soaked into everything it passed through on the way. A moisture survey answers it in one visit and costs nothing.
Do you come out at night for emergency water removal?
Yes. Water emergencies do not keep business hours and neither does the phone.
